But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.
Introduction.
What is it that displeased Jonah so much? What made him angry?
Temper in itself isn’t the problem.
Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
Paul is quoting Psalm 4:4 from his Greek translation.
Stand in awe, and sin not: Commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.
(Stand in Awe is to Tremble)
You can be so mad that your hands shake, but don’t let it consume you. Be careful, or anger will destroy you.
Neither give place to the devil.
Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
145 If it’s the Word, and God said so, that Spirit in you will cope with that Word, every time. Cause, genuine Holy Spirit will cope with the Word, ’cause the Word is Life and Spirit. Jesus said, “My Words are Life.”
And if you’ve got Eternal Life, and He is the Word, how can the Word deny the Word? See? What kind of a person would you make God? That’s one thing to know, that you’re a Christian, when you can fully agree upon every Word of God.
146 And you find yourself in love with your enemies. Somebody say, “Well, he’s nothing but a holy-roller.” And you start to get…Ah! Be careful. Um-hum. Be careful. But when you really find, yourself, that you love him! Regardless of what they do, you still love them.
147 Then you beginning to find, and your patience gets from about that long, till it just don’t have no end. Anybody just keeps saying things about you, “Well, I don’t care what you say!” Don’t get stirred up. If you get stirred up, you better go pray first, ’fore you talk to them again. Yeah. Yeah.
Don’t get in fusses. Don’t like to get in fuss; if you like to see somebody raise up in church, say, “You know what? I’ll tell you, So-and-so did so-and-so.” You say, “Now, brother, shame on you.”
148 If you say, “Oh, is that so?” Listen to that scandal? Watch out.
The Holy Spirit is not a cesspool. See? No, no. No, no. The heart is occupied by the Holy Spirit, is full of holiness, purity. “Thinketh no evil, doeth no evil; believeth all things; endureth, longsuffering.”
149 Don’t fuss. When the family gets in a fuss, don’t fuss with them. Your mother said, “I ain’t having you go up there, that old church, anymore. Well, you, all you think about now, you’re letting your hair grow out. You look like some old grandma.”
Don’t fuss with her. Say, “Okay, mother. It’s all right. I love you, just the same. And I’ll be praying for you as long as I live.”
150 Now, don’t fuss. See? Temper breeds temper. First thing you know, you grieve the Holy Spirit away from you, you’ll be fussing back. Then the Holy Spirit takes Its flight. Temper breeds temper.
And love breeds love. Be full of love. Jesus said, “This will all men know you’re My disciples, when you have love, one for another.” That’s the fruit of the Holy Spirit, love.
151 And did you know, you are a little creator, yourself? You know that? Certainly. You’ve seen people that you just love to be around. You don’t know why. Just that loving type of person. Have you seen that? Just as kind, there, you like to be around them. That’s…They create that atmosphere, by the life they live, the way they talk, their conversation.
Then, you’ve seen those that, every time, you—you shun them. All time, they want to talk about something evil, and talk about somebody. Say, “Oh, my! There they come. They’re going to criticize somebody there. He’s in here now, he’s going to talk about this man. All they’re going to do is tell dirty jokes, or something about women, or something like that.” You just hate to get around them. See? They create. Seemingly, pretty nice people, but they create that atmosphere.
And the things that you think on, the things that you do, the actions, the things you talk about, creates an atmosphere. 63-0630E - Is Your Life Worthy Of The Gospel?
Jonah had finally obeyed God and went to Nineveh.
And the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time, saying,
Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.
So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey.
And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
Herotodus agrees with these dimensions.
So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
The King of Assyria, Shalmaneser III, died at almost exactly the time Jonah would have been entering Nineveh. There was a revolt by one of his sons, who controlled 27 cities including Nineveh. A historian states: “the official master of Assyria from 824 to 822 was not Shamshi-Adad V but Assur-danin-pal as king of Nineveh, without having the title of king of Assyria.”
And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:
But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
This is the same Nineveh that had invaded Israel previously .these were heathens, worshipping false gods.
You can tell a lot about a man’s spiritual condition by his response to people repenting and rejoicing.
324 You know, when I see personal workers going with people, I want to say this about you people here, that proves what you’re made of. I’ve went to places, even, and people who is supposed to be Spirit-filled people, and see altar calls made, and, why, you couldn’t get people to go in with anybody, to pray with them.
See, that shows it’s Ichabod, “the Spirit of the Lord has departed.” See? But when you see that zeal and Fire and longing, and long for human souls! 64-0404 - Jehovah-Jireh #3
The people were in revival but the prophet wasn’t. Where is the zeal for lost souls today?
86 Preachers, a minister, why we have these burden…don’t have burdens for lost souls. I believe that it’s a lacking of the revival. I believe we should still try to pray to God to give us passions for lost souls until Jesus comes. 64-0830E - Questions And Answers #4
Why don’t Christians do that? Laodicea.
181 Oh, sure, they say, “You know what? We used to be…The little church we used to use is in the back part, this is the big one now!” And I tell you, no burden for souls, but they’ve got to see that all these things are taken care of. The ladies aid, and all these other things, all has to be taken care of, but no burden for lost souls. Oh, man, what this church has got into!
182 They were not burdened for souls, but they were burdened with wealth. That’s right. They had the wrong burden. They had a burden for their wealth but not a burden for lost souls. The Scripture said, “They didn’t know that they were wretched,” (Oh!) “miserable, blind.”
183 They think that they could take money and convert the world. “Oh, if we could just get a program on, that we could get a lot of money here, I believe we could convert the world.
If some of the rich people in our church, Brother Branham, if we could just get them to dig out, and I believe that we could start a society that would go around and convert the world. We could take airplanes and drop literature all over Africa, and things like that. If we just had some money!”
184 Brother, the world won’t be converted by money. The world will be converted by the Holy Ghost; powerful preaching of the Holy Ghost and the Cross will be the only thing that’ll convert the world. God’s program is not money. It’s the Holy Ghost, that’s what God’s program is for the Laodicean Church Age or any other church age. Yes, sir. 60-1211E - The Laodicean Church Age
But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.
And he prayed unto the Lord, and said, I pray thee, O Lord, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.
Therefore now, O Lord, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.
He was so angry about God’s mercy he became suicidal.
Jonah has the Monday morning blues.
